Justin Gaethje is an MMA fighter known for his high octane style and his ability to take punishment.  He is a two time Arizona state champion In high school, Division 1 All American wrestler in college, and former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion. He successfully defended his belt five times before vacating to join the UFC, making his debut against Michael Johnson at The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption Finale. Gaethje won the fight by TKO in round two via punches and knees. He won both fight of the night and performance of the night bonuses. 


Gaethje was next a coach on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 26 opposite Eddie Alvarez with the two set to meet after the season at UFC 218. Gaethje lost the back-and-forth fight in round three via knee, earning him Fight of the Night honors. It was the first loss of his career.


His next fight was against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC on Fox 29. Despite doing considerable damage, notably to the leg of Dustin, Gaethje lost the fight via TKO in Round 4, earning Fight of the Night honors.

 
His next fight was against James Vick in main event of UFC Fight Night 135. He won the fight via KO in round 1, winning performance of the night, his fifth consecutive bonus award in only four fights with the UFC.


Gaethje next faced Edson Barboza at UFC on ESPN 2. Gaethje won the fight in the first round by KO, knocking out Barboza with a single Right Hook. He earned yet another post-fight bonus.


Gaethje then fought Donald Cerrone at UFC on ESPN+ 16. Gaethje extended his winning streak to 3 by beating Cowboy via TKO. Earning another Performance of the Night bonus.


He then was scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, filling in for Khabib Nurmagomedov for the Interim Lightweight Title. However the event was cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic.


His bout with Ferguson was then rescheduled for the new UFC 249. In an Upset, he dominated Tony for 5 rounds before finally winning by TKO, snapping Tony Ferguson's 12-fight winning streak, and Earning Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses, as well as becoming the Interim Lightweight Champion.
